About Vannevar Bush
Vannevar Bush was a renowned American science administrator and engineer, highly praised for his role in establishing the National Science Foundation. He served as the leader of the United States Office of Scientific Research and Development during the Second World War. He was one of the main pillars in the Manhattan Project.
In 1940, he was appointed to occupy the chairmanship position of the United States Defense Research Committee. He also worked with other prominent institutions like the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, and the Carnegie Institution of Washington. He was the founder of Raytheon Company, a United States defense contractor.
Notable works
Bush was widely considered as one of the leading computer scientists of his time. He was best known for his engineering work on the electromechanical device known as Memex, which largely influenced the creation of the hypertext systems.
His 1945 essay titled "As We May Think" has been described as one of the most influential texts in the study of computer science.
Family
His parents were Perry Bush and Emma Linwood Paine, and grew up together with two sisters including American mathematician Edith Bush.
He was married to a lady called Phoebe Clara Davis and together they were blessed with two sons named John Hathaway Bush, and Richard Davis Bush.
Education
In 1909, he completed his education at Chelsea High School. He continued at Tufts College before joining Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also studied at Carnegie Institution of Washington.
Honors
His works earned him many laurels such as the Edison Medal, National Medal of Science, and the John J. Carty Award for the Advancement of Science.
In 1948, he was named a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Seven years later, he was honored with the Legion of Honor.
