Personal Life
Her birth name is Vera-Ellen Westmeier Rohe and she’s from Germany. Her father was Martin F. Rohe and her mother was Alma C. Westmeier. She started dancing when she was a child. In 1941, she married Robert Hightower, a dancer. The marriage ended after about five years. In 1954, she accepted Victor Rothschild as her husband but the marriage fell apart in 1966, about three years after they lost their three months old baby to SIDS.
Career
She started her Broadway career in 1939 and in 1945, she was in her first film titled “Wonder Man”. Other films she has been in are “Three Little Girls in Blue” and “Call Me Madam”.
Trivia
As a young teenager, she participated in the “Major Bowes Amateur Hour” and emerged winner, causing her to take the profession seriously. She also loved to swim and used it to help herself when she had a mild stroke.
Death
In 1981, she lost her life to complications relating to cancer of the ovaries.
