About Vernon Dahmer
Vernon Dahmer was a freedom fighter who was one of the leading figures during the Civil Rights Movement. In that period, he served as the head of a branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Mississippi.
With help from Medgar Evers, Dahmer created a youth wing of the association in Hattiesburg. He was admired for his numerous calls to allow black-Americans to vote.
Family
He was raised by his parents George Washington Dahmer and Ellen Louvenia Kelly. His first marriage to Warnie Laura Mott ended in 1935. Three years later, he became the wife of Ora Lee Smith. After the death of Ora, he tied the knot with Ellie Jewel Davis with whom he fathered two kids Bettie and Dennis. He also had six children from his first two marriages.
Education
He was unable to complete his education at Bay Spring High School.
Recognitions
His statue was erected at the Forrest County Courthouse in 2020. Four years before that, the Mississippi State Legislature introduced the Vernon Dahmer Day, which is celebrated on the 10th of January.
Death
Dahmer was reportedly murdered by some members of the White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. According to reports, the group was unhappy with his campaigns to allow African Americans to participate in electoral activities.
Trivia
Sam Bowers of the Ku Klux Klan was said to be the face behind the murder of Dahmer and was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1998.
