About Vic Tayback
Winning the Golden Globe Award two consecutive times, Syrian-American actor Vic Tayback is best remembered for his performance in the 1974 film, “Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore” and the series “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”.
In March 1962, he got married to Sheila Maureen Barnard. The couple had a son together named Christopher.
His Early Life
Tayback’s parents were Najeeb James Tayback and Helen; they were immigrants from Syria. Vic had one sibling called Joe Tayback. Growing up in Burbank California, he graduated in 1949 from Burbank High School. After high school, he attended Glendale Community College and also underwent training at a radio and television school.
Television and Film Career
Tayback’s career in film was a very extensive one as he was featured in numerous television series and movies.
In 1958, he was cast as Simon the Canaanite in Harold D. Schuster’s “The Power of the Ressurection”. That decade also saw him get minor roles in films such as “T-Bird Gang” and “Gangster Story”.
In the early 1960s, he featured in “Five Minutes to Live”, “Five Weeks in a Balloon”, and “Love with the Proper Stranger”.
During the 1970s, he had a successful career as he got roles in science-fiction series such as “Star Trek”, “Here Come the Brides” and “That Girl”.
Tayback also ventured into comedy as well. He appeared on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, “Fantasy Island”, and many more.
In feature films, he made an appearance in “The Gambler” (1974), “The Cheap Detective” (1978), and so on.
His portrayal of Mel Sharples in the 1974 film “Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore” and the television series Alice (1976–1985) made him a fan favorite.
Between 1976 and 1985, Vic Tayback was cast in “Alice”, a TV series created by American screenwriter Robert Getchell. The actor’s performance helped him win three Golden Globe Award nominations and one Primetime Emmy nomination. At the 37th Golden Globe Awards in 1980, he took home the “Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series”. A year later, he won his second Golden Globe – “Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or TV Film”.
Cause of Death
On May 25, 1990, Tayback suffered and died of a heart attack at the age of 60.
