About Víctor Jara
Victor Jara was a legendary Chilean folk musician who was widely regarded as one of the best musicians during his peak days. He was known for his songs, which were particularly against poverty and social injustice. He was also an accomplished poet, teacher, theater director, and Communist Party member.
He was one of the forefathers of the politically-motivated popular music genre known as Nueva canción. He began his career in the late 1950s after a chance encounter with musician Violeta Parra.
In 1996, he released his self-titled debut album, which was a huge success. Following that he went on to establish a solid repertory in the folk music scene with top-charting recordings like "Canto por travesura," "Manifiesto," and "La Población."
Death
Owing to his political involvements he was tortured and executed by Augusto Pinochet's government.
