About Victor McLaglen
Victor McLaglen was a British-American actor of Scottish descent who first made a name as a boxer. The Academy Award winner (for Best Actor) collaborated several times with filmmakers such as John Wayne and John Ford.
McLaglen spent his childhood in South Africa, where his father was a protestant clergyman. He enlisted in the British army at age 14, having forged his age in order to serve in the Second Boer War. He was instead given guard duties in an English castle, and was summarily dismissed when his true age was discovered.
The sportsman moved to Canada, where he dabbled in law enforcement, wrestling, and finally boxing. His boxing career blossomed momentarily.
McLaglen returned to Britain and enlisted to serve the British army in the First World War. Afterward, his brief return to boxing was truncated when a British producer invited him to audition for the character of a boxer in a movie. He made the role and thus was his debut in the world of screenplay; which will ultimately make him a Hollywood sensation in his day.
The boxer-turned-actor, moved to Hollywood in 1925, where he played lead and supporting roles in over 100 movies in the span of his career. Some of the films that he appeared in the 1920s include: “In the Blood”, “Women and Diamonds”, “The Passionate Adventure”, and “Hangman’s House”.
The accomplished entertainer was famed for his movie roles as an Irishman and a drunk.
For his role in John Ford’s film “The Informer”, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1935.
While in Canada, McLaglen joined a circus train where he offered his audiences $25 if anyone could go more than 2 rounds with him.
