About Victoria Kaiulani
A member of the Kalākaua Dynasty, Victoria Kaiulani was in line to ascend the throne as the leader of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Her dreams were cut short in 1893 when her mother was overthrown. She later moved to the United States where she campaigned against what she described as an unfair treatment to the people of the Kingdom.
Outside royalty
Kaiulani lived a normal life after the overthrow of her people. She was a fan of painting and published a number of arts. She worked closely with American artist Joseph Dwight Strong. In 1890, she published one of her most popular works titled “Poppies”.
Family
She was the daughter of Princess Miriam Likelike and her Scottish husband Archibald Scott Cleghorn who was a successful businessman. She also spent some time under the guidance of English investor Theophilus Harris Davies.
Trivia
As a child, she enjoyed a number of sporting events like equestrianism, swimming and surfing.
The Kaʻiulani Project, which was aimed at publicizing the legacy of the princess, started in 2007.
