About Vida Blue
The three-time World Series champion burst onto the baseball scene as a left-handed pitcher for the Oakland Athletics. He received the league's award for “Most Valuable Player” in 1971.
Childhood & Education
The oldest of 6 children, he was born in Mansfield, Louisiana. Even as a teenager at DeSoto High School, his athletics skills shone through as he played for the baseball team and quarterbacked for the football team.
Professional Career
He joined the A’s in spring training for the 1968 season; and a year later, he made his debut for the team. He pitched a no-hitter against the AL West defending champions the Minnesota Twins. Following his impressive performance in the 1971 season, he landed cameo roles in several motion pictures such as the 1972 thriller “Black Gunn.”
From 1972-74, he joined the A’s every year for the World Series. By his retirement in 1997, he had bagged 209 wins in 143 complete games. He also pitched for the Giants and Kansas City.
Awards
He was a winner of both the CY Young and the MVP awards.
Cause of Death
This ex-baseball star died from complication of cancer.
