About Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh was a legendary Dutch painter whose paintings were notable for their strong emotions, beauty and colours. His paintings played instrumental roles in influencing 20th-century art. His notable works include “Starry Night”, “Sorrow, Sunflowers” and “Bedroom in Aries”. He battled with mental illness for years and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 37.
Early Life
Van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands to Theodorus van Gogh and Anna Cornelia Carbentus. He was a very serious child and was homeschooled by his mother until 1860 when he was sent to a village school. He developed an interest in art when he was still a young boy, however, he did not become a professional painter until his adult years.
In 1877, he decided to become a pastor. However, he failed his theology entrance test, as well as a three-month course at a missionary school. Despite his failure, he still worked as a missionary before attending the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in 1880.
Career and Most Notable Works
He did not start painting until his late twenties. And when he started painting, he completed over 2,100 artworks in about a decade. He produced his best-known works in the last few years of his life. His most notable and popular artworks include “The Starry Night”, “Café Terrace at Night”, “Starry Night Over the Rhône”, and his famous self-portraits.
Legacy
After his death, many of his works were held in memorial exhibitions throughout Europe. His works are some of the world’s most expensive paintings, with over $100 million made in sales.
The Van Gogh Museum was opened in 1973 and became the second most popular museum, receiving millions of visitors annually.
Trivia
Many scholars believe van Gogh didn’t cut off his ear by himself. Instead, other theories believe that the artist was protecting his friend Paul Gauguin, another painter, from going to jail after an argument.
