About Vincente Minnelli
It can be argued that Vincente Minnelli decided to pursue a career in the movie industry after he came into contact with actors while working for Paul Stone as a photographer. His earliest work in the industry was as a set and costume designer. It was during his time at Radio City Music Hall that he began working as a stage director.
Minnelli spent over four decades in the industry in which he directed many films and stage plays. Some of his popular works were 1951’s “An American in Paris” and “Gigi” which premiered in 1958.
Family
He was the son of Marie Émilie Odile Lebeau, otherwise known as Mina Gennell. His dad was Vincent Charles Minnelli, who worked as a musical director. He had three other siblings.
His marriage to actress Judy Garland produced a daughter called Liza May Minnelli who would become an actress. He also had a child with Georgette Magnani named Christiane Nina Minnelli. Until his death, he was married to Margaretta Lee Anderson.
Achievements
His work on “Gigi” earned him an Academy Award for “Best Director”.
Entertainment Weekly named him in their list of “Greatest Directors of all time”.
Death
He spent most of his last years in the hospital after he was said to be suffering from pneumonia and emphysema. He gave up the ghost after a number of treatments.
Trivia
He served as a judge at the 1967 Cannes Film Festival.
Minnelli is credited with inventing the popular crab dolly camera.
