About Violeta Parra
Violeta Parra was a household name during the 1960s and 70s. She has been credited for laying the foundation for the movement known as The Chilean New Song (Nueva Canción Chilena). The Chilean singer began her career as a nightclub performer before garnering fame in the late 1940s.
In the 1950s, she began touring Europe where she performed in countries like France and Poland. Parra is best known for her 1966 song "Gracias a la Vida". She also released loads of albums with some titled “Carpa de la Reina” and “Las últimas composiciones de Violeta Parra”.
Family
She was one of the children of Clarisa Sandoval Navarrete and her music teacher husband Nicanor Parra Alarcón. The singer married Luis Cereceda in 1948. The couple had two children named Ángel Parra and Isabel Parra, both known to be musicians. She later married Luis Arce with whom she had a child called Carmen Luisa.
Education
She attended a Normal School in Santiago.

In 2017, Google developed a doodle to celebrate her 100th anniversary.
She was the subject of Andrés Wood’s 2011 film “Violeta Went to Heaven” which was nominated for an Academy Award the following year.
