About Vittorio Alfieri
Despite his short career, Vittorio Alfieri left an indelible mark on Italian literature. His wide range of works included poems and plays. Fascinated by the works of ancient writers like Voltaire and Plutarch, Alfieri gained popularity for his numerous comedy and tragic literature.
In 1777, he came up with a political prose which was titled “Della tyranny”. He went on to write other novels before coming up with one of his most popular plays dubbed “Saul” which was first performed in 1782. Some of his other well-known works were titled “Cleopatra” and “The Pazzi conspiracy”.
Family
A descendant of the Count of Cortemilia, Vittorio was born to Monica Maillard de Tournon and Antonio Amedeo Alfieri. He had two siblings named Giulia and Giuseppe Maria. His other half-siblings were Vittorio Antonio and Angela Maria Eleonora.
Education
He had his education at the Royal Academy of Turin.
Trivia
His autobiography titled “Life written by it” was posthumously published in 1806.
In addition to his native Italian language, Alfieri studied French.
