About Viv Richards
Viv Richards started from a humble beginning before rising to the top as one of the best cricket players in the history of the sport. He played his first game for the St. John's Cricket Club at age 18. He featured in his maiden first-class match the following year. After impressing with his performances at a number of tournaments, he moved to the United Kingdom.
He made his professional debut in 1974 with Somerset CCC. He played for the team for more than a decade before joining Queensland. He also played for Glamorgan in the UK.
International career
Richards, who was born in Antigua, played his first Test match in 1974 as a member of the West Indian team. The following year, he helped the team to win the first edition of the Cricket World Cup. They repeated the success four years later. Between 1984 and 1991, he served as the team’s captain.
Family
His brothers, Donald and Mervyn who played cricket at the amateur level, encouraged him to pursue a career in the sport. He has been married to a lady known as Miriam, with whom he has two children including crickter Mali Richards.
He and Neena Gupta have a daughter called Masaba Gupta who works as a fashion designer.
Education
He was a student of Antigua Grammar Secondary School and St. John's Boys Primary School.
Achievements
He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1994. Five years later, his country honored him with a Knight Commander of the Order of the Nation medal. The Richards–Botham Trophy was named after him and English cricket star Sir Ian Botham.
In 2009, he joined other legends in the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
Trivia
Cricinfo magazine named him the best “ODI Batsman ever” in 2006.
