About Volkan Demirel
Before entering into management, Volkan Demirel spent his professional playing career with two Turkish clubs – Kartalspor and Fenerbahce. The Turkish international’s most defining moment on the international scene came when he steered his side to a bronze medal at the 2008 UEFA European Championship held in Turkey.
Personal Life
The former goalkeeper has two children with former Miss Belgium Zeynep Sever.
Career Highlight
He was the starting goalkeeper at Kartalspor in 1999 at age 18. He played over 45 matches for Kartalspor from 2000 to 2002. He later transferred to Istanbul-based club Fenerbahce in 2002. He played almost 400 games for the club. At the end of his contract at Fenerbahce, he signed another one-year extension with the club at the end of the 2008-2009 season. He saved three penalty kicks against its opponent Sevilla. Through that penalty save, Fenerbahce played for the first time in the UEFA Champions League.
He retired in 2019 and became an assistant coach for Fenerbache.
Internationally, he was selected to play for the Turkey under 20 squad in 2001. He officially joined the Turkey national team in 2004. He was the starting keeper for his national team during the UEFA Euro 2008 championships, a tournament which saw Turkey finish in third place.
In 2021, he was appointed as manager of Fatih Karagümrük.
Honors
With Fenerbahçe, he won 5 Turkish Super Lig titles. He also won the Turkish Cup twice – in 2012 and 2013.
