About W. C. Fields
- C. Fields was the stage name of William Claude Dukenfield, an American actor, comedian, juggler and writer. He got his start in show business in the late 1890s as a vaudeville performer.
He gained some exposure through his juggling before performing in comedy shows on Broadway starting from 1905. In 1915, he made his debut as a film actor and screenwriter through the short silent film, “Pool Sharks”. He would go on to become a household name through films such as “Running Wild”, “It’s a Gift” and “The Big Broadcast of 1938”.
Family Life
He was married to Harriet Hughes, who was also a vaudevillian. They had one son and separated in 1907, after about 7 years of marriage, but they never divorced.
He also had relationships with fellow performer Bessie Poole (which produced a son) and actress Carlotta Monti (which ended with his death).
Death
He died on December 25, 1946 from a gastric haemorrhage.
