About Walt Whitman
The Father of Free Verse
Walt Whitman was an American poet and journalist, considered one of the most influential poets in American history. He was controversial for the amount of sexuality that his work exudes at the time, even extending as far as critics questioning his own sexuality, but biographers were unable to accurately pinpoint his sexual orientation. Aside from sexuality, Whitman’s prose-like works also cover the topic of death and is usually adorned with unusual symbols.
Notable Works
Whitman’s most well-known work is Leaves of Grass, which he continuously worked on from 1855 to 1891 and spanned seven editions. His other notable works include the poetry collection Drum-Taps (1865), the temperance novel Franklin Evans; or The Inebriate (1842), and his major work of comparative politics and letters Democratic Vistas (1871).
