About Ward Hunt
Ward Hunt was an American politician whose expertise in law helped him become the Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals between 1868-1869. He served on the US Supreme Court from 1872-1882 as an associate justice.
Life & Career
Hunt was born in Utica, New York and attended Union College, where he graduated in 1828. He studied law at Litchfield Law School and was called to the bar in 1931 and started practicing law as well as getting involved with American politics.
He served as the Mayor of Utica in 1844. Though he had been a registered Democrat, he was one of the founding members of New York’s Republican Party.
Personal life
He married Mary Ann Savage in 1837 and they had three children: Elizabeth, John, and Ward. Hunt got married to Maria Taylor after Mary Ann’s death. He died in 1886.
