During his tenure as a senator, he helped author the 1964 Civil Rights Act and helped enact it into law. He vigorously defended consumer protection legislation, and by pushing for the Columbia and Snake River Dams, he championed the generation of electric power in the Pacific Northwest.
Personal Life
He married his second wife Jermaine Elliot Peralta in 1964. They remained married until he died.
