About Wendy Carlos
American musician Wendy Carlos is credited for popularizing the use of the famous Moog synthesizer which was manufactured by American physicist Robert Moog. She shot to stardom with her 1968 album “Switched-On Bach”, which was a compilation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music. The project broke into the top ten on Billboard’s 200 chart.
Regarded as one of the best composers of her generation, Carlos has also recorded the soundtrack of many films including Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” and “A Clockwork Orange”.
Personal Life
She was born Walter Carlos and was raised alongside a sibling. In 1972, she underwent a gender reassignment operation to change her identity from a man to a woman.
Education
She attended St. Raphael Academy and Brown University before enrolling at Columbia University for her master’s program.
Awards
Carlos won three Grammys in 1969. She was also honored with the SEAMUS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
Trivia
She filed a $22 million lawsuit against Scottish songwriter Momus in 1998.
