About Westbrook Pegler
From 1934 until his retirement in 1962, American author and journalist Westbrook Pegler worked as a syndicated newspaper columnist. A bold and objective journalist, Pegler was not afraid to take a swipe at politicians, including Presidents from both parties, such as John F. Kennedy, Harry Truman, and Herbert Hoover. For example, he was one of the biggest critics of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, a comprehensive economic and social package that was rolled out prior to the start of World War II (WWII).
Awards
He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1941 for his coverage of illegal racketeering inside labor unions. He, thus, became the first columnist to receive this coveted award in journalism.
Early Life
His father was a well-known reporter. Inspired by the works of his father, he began working for United Press (UP) in several bureaus around the nation while still a student at a Chicago high school.
The Minnesota-journalist was married a couple of times. His first marriage was to Julia Harpman. Following the death of Julia in 1955, he remarried (to his secretary Maude Wettje).
Career
After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1918 - 1919, he produced sports content for United News (1919–25) and the Chicago Tribune (1925–33). The Chicago Tribune hired him in 1925. He publicly aired his right-wing beliefs as a controversial newspaper columnist in the 1930s for the Chicago Daily News and The Washington Post. His criticism of Eleanor Roosevelt, then-First Lady of the U.S and wife of FDR, intensified throughout World War II (WWII).
