About Whitney Young
Whitney Young was a civil rights activist whose works were mostly geared towards ending employment discrimination, especially in the United States. His rise to prominence began in 1949 when he was named as the relations secretary of the National Urban League in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The following year, he was made the president of the league’s Omaha branch. After helping the organization to record some amount of successes, Young was appointed the league’s Executive Director in 1961. He used his position to fight for equal opportunities for the minority and deprived.
Family
His dad Whitney M. Young, Sr was once the leader of the Kentucky Negro Educational Association. His mother Laura Young was a teacher and had a sister called Margaret. He was the husband of Margaret Buckner with whom he had two kids.
Education
He completed Lincoln Institute before enrolling at Kentucky State University. He later attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he would read electrical engineering. Young did his master’s program at the University of Minnesota.
Awards
He was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
