About Wilbur Shaw
The three-time Indianapolis 500 winner, Wilbur Shaw, was one of the most instrumental figures that played a role in the transformation of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Background
Shaw was born in Shelbyville, Indiana. When he was 25, he participated in his first Indianapolis 500 race. From that time, he became the second person to win the race three times and first to win it two consecutive times.
After the US entered World War II, racing activities came to a halt. Shaw partnered with businessman Tony Hulman to purchase the Indianapolis Speedway for $750,000; that was when everything changed.
For his effort in reviving the Speedway, Shaw was elected president. With his business acumen, he turned the race into one of the world’s biggest and entertained crowds. His life was cut short in 1954 after getting killed in an air crash.
