About Wilfred Thesiger
Mubarak bin Landan, another name for Sir Wilfred Thesiger, was a British military officer, explorer, and author. He belonged to a bygone generation of twentieth-century travelers and was a restless explorer. His significant works were inspired by his travels to inaccessible regions of Africa and Asia.
Early Life
His birthplace was Ethiopia's Addis Ababa. His father, Wilfred Thesiger, served as the general British consul in Ethiopia (1909 - 1919). He studied at Eton College and Magdalen College, Oxford.
Career
He resumed an adventurous lifestyle after leaving Oxford. He was assigned to the Darfur area and worked for the Sudan Political Service from 1934 - 1939. He battled the Italian occupation of Ethiopia when WWII broke out, alongside Ethiopian and British forces.
He embarked on a two-month journey across the world's biggest sand desert, the Rub al-Khali (Empty Quarter), in 1945. He proceeded to Iraq and lived among the people of the southern marshlands for seven years.
"Arabian Sands" (1959) and the autobiographical "The Life of My Choice" (1987) are two of his best-known works. He gave the Pitt Rivers Museum his collection of about 38,000 travel-related photos.
