About Wilfrid Laurier
Wilfrid Laurier, in full, Sir Henri Charles Wilfrid Laurier, was one of Canada’s greatest politicians and statesmen. He served as Canada’s seventh prime minister and was the first French-Canadian Prime Minister of the country. Laurier’s 15-year term, spanning from 1896 to 1911, remains one of the longest terms of office for a Canadian prime minister in history.
Early Life & Education
He was born in Saint-Lin-Laurentides, Quebec, to French-Canadian parents. He did his primary and secondary studies at Collège de L’Assomption. He was an alumnus of the McGill University in Montreal, where he studied law.
The politician was elected to the “Legislative Assembly of Quebec” in 1871.
Political Career
After becoming victorious in the 1874 federal election, he became a Member of Parliament (MP). He served as the minister of Inland Revenue from October 1877 to October 1878. He then became “leader of the Official Opposition” in 1887.
Laurier reached the pinnacle of his political career when he won the 1896 federal election to become Canada’s Prime Minister. His tenure in office saw the passage of the “1910 Naval Service Act,” construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, entry of Saskatchewan and Alberta into Canadian Confederation, and efforts to establish Canada as autonomous within the “British Empire.”
Death
He died of a stroke aged 77 on 17 February 1919.
