About Wilhelm Maybach
Wilhelm Maybach was a famous German industrialist and engineer. He is noted for designing the earliest engines in Mercedes automobiles and other brands, earning him the title “King of Designers.”
Background & Early Life
He was of German descent and was born in Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg. However, he lived in Lowenstein and Reutlingen for most of his childhood.
He was first educated at a philanthropic school in Reutlingen, where he studied at the institution’s engineering workshop. He later enrolled at a public high school, studying mathematics and physics. By age 19, he had earned the appropriate qualification to design and work on engines.
Career Highlights & Engine Designs
From the late 1880s, Wilhelm partnered with fellow engineer Gottlieb Daimler to design and build high-speed and light internal combustion engines that could be used on land, in the air, and water. The engines were installed in the earliest motorbikes, motorboats, and Mercedes models.
He later became the technical director of “Diamler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG). However, following a misunderstanding with fellow chairmen of DMG, he left the company in 1907 and co-founded “Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH” in 1909. The company became known as “Maybach” in 1919 and began the production of large luxurious automobiles. In addition, the “Versailles Treaty” made Maybach produce most German tank engines used during the Second World War.
