About Wilhelm von Humboldt
Wilhelm Humboldt is an important figure in history who was known to be a Prussian philosopher and the founder of the Humboldt University of Berlin.
Life and Death
Wilhelm was from Potsdam, Margraviate of Brandenburg. He was home schooled and went on to be one of the most influential officials in German education. The philosopher served as a law clerk to the Supreme Court in Berlin in 1789. His credit as a philosopher is “The Limits of State Action” (1791-1792). He was also a diplomat and nabbed the positions of Prussian minister in Rome and ambassador in Vienna.
The education theorist was also a linguist who translated some of the works of ancient Greek writers such as Pindar and Aeschylus.
He took Caroline Von Dacheron as his wife in 1791 and they had eight children. He breathed his last in Tegel, Prussia in 1835. He was 67.
His Legacy
He was one of the biggest proponents of universal elementary education and the division of schools into three levels- elementary school, secondary school and universities.
