About Will Self
The English author William Woodard Self, affectionately called Will Self, is best known for his satirical novels. He has written non-fiction stories, fiction stories, novels and novellas. He likes writing on issues related to drug abuse, psychiatry and mental illness.
Background and Early Life
At a tender age, he started smoking and sniffing drugs such as cocaine, heroin and cannabis. He suffered from mental health issues. The schools he studied at were University College School, Christ's College, and Exeter College at Oxford University.
Career & Major Works
Self first worked for the Greater London Council after he completed his undergraduate studies. In 1991, he came to the limelight after the publication of a collection of his short stories titled “The Quantity Theory of Insanity”. He was nominated as part of the 20 "Best Young British Novelists" in 1993 by Granta magazine.
In 1995, he joined a British newspaper, the Observer, as a journalist. Two years later, he was sacked for sniffing heroin in the jet of John Major, a British Prime Minister. That same year, he was employed as a journalist by the Times, a British daily national newspaper.
Some of his major works include “Dorian, an Imitation”, “Umbrella”, “My Idea of Fun”, “Dr. Mukti and Other Tales of Woe” and “Psycho Too”.
Family Life
He was the son of Peter John Otter Self and Elaine Rosenbloom. He got married to Kate Chancellor in 1989. Alexis, Ivan, Madeleine and Luther are names of his children.
Awards
He won the "Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize" in 1991. In 1998, The Paris Review awarded him with the “Aga Khan Prize for Fiction” for his work “Tough Tough Toys for Tough Tough Boys”.
