About Willem de Kooning
Willem de Kooning made a name for himself as one of the most prominent artists of the 20th century. A pioneer of the American abstract expressionism art movement, he became one of the informal groups of painters, poets, musicians and dancers of the 1950s and 1960s known as the New York School.
His most notable paintings include “Police Gazette”, “Woman III”, “Interchange” and “Woman VI”.
Family Life
From the age of three, he was raised separately by his mother, Cornella Nobel and his father, Leendert de Kooning, who had divorced. He married fellow painter, Elaine Fried in 1943. They separated from 1957 to 1976, when they reunited.
Achievements
He was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Praemium Imperiale and National Medal of Arts.
Death
He died aged 92 on 19 March 1997, having suffered from Alzheimer's since the 1980s.
