About Willem Johan Kolff
Dutch physician, Willem Johan Kolff, was one of the leading inventors and pioneers of artificial organs and the dialysis machine. He is regarded as the “Father of Artificial Organs.”
Background
Kolff attended Leiden University, where he studied medicine and continued his medical career at Groningen University. While there, he developed an interest in identifying artificial methods of removing toxins from patients with kidney conditions.
World War II
During the Second World War, Kolff created the first artificial kidney. In 1943, he used it to treat his first patient. He earned his PhD from Groningen in 1946 for his work during the war.
He later moved to the US to work on several artificial organ creations and improve the dialysis machine. In 1967, he was appointed head of the Division of Artificial Organs and Institute for Biomedical Engineering at the University of Utah.
Honors
Kolff received several awards and honors, including the 1964 Cameron Prize for Therapeutics, the 1982 AMA Scientific Achievement Award, and the 2002 Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research.
