About William Asher
William Asher was a prolific early television producer, screenwriter, and director who chalked up over two dozen series. He is best remembered for his productions “Fireball 500”, “Bewitched” and “Kay O'Brien”. The latter, which was a medical drama TV series, starred Patricia Kalember and Brian Benben.
Early Life and Career
He hails from Manhattan, in the USA. When he was 11 years old, his parents got divorced, forcing him to move to a very chaotic life in New York. He never finished high school nor did he attend college.
He loved literature and always wanted to be a writer. He began writing short stories while serving in the army. After leaving the army, he began adapting and directing his own short stories for the television series "Invitation Playhouse".
Asher debuted the radio-to-television converted sitcom “Our Miss Brooks” when television was still in its infancy.
In 1952, he started directing the TV sitcom “I Love Lucy”. Due to his early success, Asher was referred to as an "early wunderkind of TV-land" and was exaggeratedly credited with "creating" the sitcom in one magazine article.
He started directing “Bewitched” episodes in 1964. From the fourth season on, he was the series' producer.
Awards
Asher was nominated for an Emmy four times, but only once did he take home the prize for directing ‘Bewitched’ in 1966.
Spouses and Children
The American filmmaker tied the knot with actress Danny Sue Nolan. The marriage produced two children. His second marriage was to actress Elizabeth Montgomery, with whom he had three children. All in all, he married four times.
Death
Asher died of Alzheimer’s disease on July 16, 2012, aged 90.
