About William Edwards Deming
American statistician and engineer, William Edwards Deming won the Shewhart Medal and Order of the Sacred Treasure in 1955 and 1960, respectively, for his immense contribution to the development of statistical methods that helped hasten Japan's recovery after the Second World War.
Early Life
The statistician was born to William Albert Deming and Pluma Irene Edwards. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1921 and the University of Colorado Boulder in 1925. Deming later went on to graduate from Yale University in 1928.
Career
Deming worked as a professor of statistics at New York University from 1946 to 1993. He later went on to join Columbia University's graduate school of business from 1988 to 1993. The statistician developed various sampling techniques that were adopted by the U.S. Department of the Census and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 1993, the scientist founded the W. Edwards Deming Institute in Washington intending to enrich society through his philosophy.

The American statistician married Agnes Bell in 1922.
