About William Fowler
1983 Nobel Prize winner in physics, William Alfred Fowler was an American nuclear physicist who later became a successful astrophysicist. The astrophysicist is popularly known for his experimental research into the energy produced when nuclear reactions occur within stars.
Early Life
The astrophysicist was born to John MacLeod Fowler and Jennie Summers Watson. He graduated from the Ohio State University in 1933 and later received a Ph.D. in nuclear physics from the California Institute of Technology.
Career
Fowler's career in astrophysics received a huge boost after he co-authored his most famous paper, "Synthesis of the Elements in Stars", with Cambridge cosmologist Fred Hoyle in the mid-1950s. He is known for categorizing most nuclear processes in a B2FH paper. The scientist was a professor at Caltech in 1946.
Personal Life
The astrophysicist married Adriane Fay from 1912 to 1919. After his divorce, he married Mary Dutcher in 1919. By Fay, he fathered two children – Mary Emily and Martha.
Death
The physicist died of kidney failure in 1995.
