About William Glackens
William Glackens is a founder of the artistic movement called Ashcan School. He began his career with The Philadelphia Record newspaper as one of their artist-reporters. He later joined the Philadelphia Press in 1892 before moving to New York World four years later.
A realist painter, the American was a member of ‘The Eight’ which was made up of a number of elite artists including George Luks. Glackens was known for his numerous artworks including 1901’s “Hammerstein's Roof Garden” and “Easter River from Brooklyn” which was published the following year.
His Family
He was the younger brother of Louis Glackens, a famous cartoonist. In 1904, he married Edith Dimock, also an artist.
Education
After Central High School, he joined the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Recognitions
In 1906, he was selected into the famous National Academy of Design.
Trivia
Some of his works have been exhibited at centers like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Museum of American Art.
He also helped Albert C. Barnes, an American businessman and art collector, to gather some European paintings which would set as the backbone for the educational institute known as Barnes Foundation.
