About William Guarnere
William Guarnere was amongst the most celebrated World War II soldiers of the United States. He was a non-commissioned officer and was nicknamed "Wild Bill" for his brutality towards an enemy.
Early life
At age 15 and in the 1930s, he served on the Citizens Military Training Camp (CMTC) program. His initial plan was to serve as a US Army officer after completing the program. However, as a result of the European war, the program was canceled.
After quitting South Philadelphia High school, he took a job at Baldwin Locomotive Works to help build Sherman tanks for the military. In 1942, he obtained his diploma and was also enlisted in the US Army Airborne.
Army Highlights
He was an officer with "Easy Company" and the Second Battalion of the 101 Airborne Division. His first combat jump was on the American airborne landings in Normandy during the "Allied France invasion."
He was part of the Army team that tried to secure the Sainte-Marie-du-Mont village. He was also one of the 13 men who attacked over 40 Germans at Brécourt Manor.
He permanently damaged his right leg during a bomb explosion at Foy while holding the defensive line. It ended his participation in World War II.
