About William H. Seward
William H. Seward was an American attorney and politician remembered for being the 24th United States Secretary of State as well as the 12th Governor of New York. He is also known for serving as the United States Senator from New York from 1849 to 1861. He contested for the Republican Party's presidential nomination for the United States presidential election in 1860 but lost to Abraham Lincoln.
Family Life
He was the son of Mary and Samuel Sweezy Seward. He had two older brothers. In 1824, he got married to Frances Adeline Seward, with whom he fathered five children. The marriage ended with Frances' death from a heart attack in 1865. He adopted a child after Frances' death.
Trivia
On April 14, 1865, he and his family almost lost their lives in an assassination attempt which took place in their home. The assassination attempt was orchestrated by the same people who successfully assassinated President Lincoln that same day.
