His brilliant work in psychology gave birth to his nickname the Father of American psychology. During his lifetime he wrote several influential books in the field of psychology such as The Principles of Psychology and Essays in Radical Empiricism.

He was the son of Henry James Sr. and Mary Robertson Walsh. He had four siblings. He married Alice Howe Gibbens in May 1878 and fathered 5 children with her.
