About William Joseph Chaminade
Blessed William Joseph Chaminade was a French Catholic priest who survived the anti-clerical persecution during the French Revolution. He is known for being the founder of the Society of Mary (also known as the Marianists). In 1973, Pope Paul VI declared him Venerable and in 2000, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
He was the fourteenth child of Catherine Bethon and Blaise Chaminade. Three of his brothers also became priests. Throughout his life, he never got married nor had any children.
Over the years, a number of miracles have been attributed to the intercession of Chaminade, including the curing of an Argentine woman's cancer in 1991 and the healing of an American woman's deadly tumor. It was based on the former miracle that he was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
