About William Penn
William Penn was an English Quaker, philosopher and landowner best remembered for being the founder of the colony of Pennsylvania. His democratic principles such as civil rights and religious freedom significantly inspired the United States Constitution.
Personal Life
He was married twice. His first marriage was to Gulielma Maria Springett, with whom he fathered eight children. After Gulielma’s death, he got married to his second wife Hannah Margaret Callowhill, with whom he had eight children, including Thomas Penn and Richard Penn, Sr.
Trivia
He was arrested and jailed on numerous occasions because of his faith.
He strongly opposed slavery in America.
In 1984, the then President of the United States, Ronald Reagan named him an honorary citizen of the United States.
