The New York-born actor and filmmaker was known for his appearances in films such as “Tumbleweeds”, “Ben-Hur”, “The Poppy Girl’s Husband” and “The Tiger Man”. He is also the author of several books including “The Golden West Boys, Injun and Whitey” and “Told Under a White Oak Tree”.
Family
Hart was the son of Nicholas Hart and Rosanna Hart. He wed actress Winifred Westover in 1921, their marriage ended in 1927 after a divorce. They had a son.
Career
The actor started performing in films in 1914, playing supporting roles in two short films. He burst into the limelight with his lead act in the feature ``The Bargain” directed by Reginald Barker. The following year, he starred in a Western short work produced by Thomas Ince.
Hart began producing exclusive feature films such as “Square Deal Sanderson” and “The Toll Gate” which became popular among fans.
In 1919, the actor was featured as John Haynes in “John Petticoats”, an American silent action film directed by Lambert Hillyer. He starred alongside actors Walt Whitman, Ethel Shannon and Andrew Arbuckle.
Trivia
He was chosen by exhibitors as the biggest money-making star in the US in 1915 and 1916.
Honors
The actor was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6363 Hollywood Blvd and was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1975.
