About William Steig
Known as the "King of Cartoons," cartoonist William Steig created more than 2,500 drawings and 115 magazine covers for The New Yorker magazine, where he worked for 73 years. He is also the author of award-winning children's books, including "Shrek!"
Early Years
He attended three institutions after finishing high school at the age of 15, spending just five days at the Yale School of Fine Arts, two years at the City College of New York, and then three years at the National Academy of Design.
Career
He sold his first comic book to "The New Yorker" in 1930. Later, he began penning children's books. In 1968, he released "Roland the Minstrel Pig," his debut children's book.
"Sylvester and the Magic Pebble," his subsequent undertaking, was awarded the 1970 Caldecott Medal.
Later, his cartoons appeared in various books, including "William Steig: Drawings" (1979).
The DreamWorks Animation movie "Shrek" was inspired by his 1990 picture book "Shrek!"
Trivia
Starting in 1956, a famous series of dolls using one of his cartoon characters, "Poor Pitiful Pearl," was produced.
Personal Life
He had four marriages and three kids.
After his death in 2003, the producers of the 2004 computer-animated fantasy comedy film “Shrek 2” paid homage to his contributions.
Awards
He earned the 1984 CINE Golden Eagle Award in Education.
