About William Westmoreland
William Westmoreland is best remembered for his time as a commander during the Vietnam War. The United States Army general led US forces in the war from 1964 to 1968 and implemented an attrition military strategy (against the People’s Army of Vietnam and the Viet Cong) which was eventually not successful.
From 1968 to 1972, he was the Chief of Staff of the United States Army. He previously fought in the Korean War and World War II.
Family Life
His parents’ names were James Ripley Westmoreland and Eugenia Talley Childs. He was married to Katherine Stevens Van Deusen, who bore him two daughters and one son.
Achievements
He was honored with the Army Distinguished Service Medal, a Bronze Star Medal and the Legion of Merit.
Death
He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease years before his death. He died in a retirement home in Charleston, South Carolina on July 18, 2005 aged 91.
