About Willie Sutton
Willie Sutton was an American criminal who gained notoriety for his numerous bank robberies. Considered as one of the notorious robbers during the 20th Century, Sutton was named in the “FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” in 1950.
Family
He was the son of Mary Ellen Bowles and her blacksmith husband William Francis Sutton Sr, and was raised together with four children. He had a daughter with Louise Leudemann called Jeanie. He later married Olga Kowalska.
Deeds
He was sentenced to 30 years after his robbery in 1931. He escaped from prison the following year, but was grabbed again in 1934 after robbing the Corn Exchange Bank and Trust Company. He was given a maximum of 50 years jail sentence. After serving eleven years, he escaped again but was recaptured.
His criminal career lasted for four decades through which he robbed about $2 million. He was pardoned in 1969 on grounds of good behavior and poor health.
Trivia
He mostly used a Thompson submachine gun for his operations.
He was likened to the Robin Hood fictional character, after it was alleged that his targets were mostly the rich.
