About Willy Brandt
During the Nazi era, Herbert Ernst Karl Frahm fled to Sweden and Norway where he started working as a journalist and adopted the pen name Willy Brandt. His political journey started in 1934 when he, together with other European youths, founded the International Bureau of Revolutionary Youth Organizations.
He returned to the country in 1946 as a Norwegian government official and joined the Social Democratic Party two years later. Between 1957 and 1966, he served as West Berlin’s Governing Mayor. After leaving office, he was appointed the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs while serving as the country’s Vice-Chancellor from 1966 to 1969.
He moved a step higher and was made West Germany’s Chancellor in 1969. He was also the leader of SDP from 1964 to 1987.
Family
He was raised by his mother Martha Frahm but never had the opportunity to meet his dad, John Heinrich Möller. He was married to Brigitte Seebacher. Prior to their union in 1983, he was married to Rut Hansen, a renowned writer. Together they had three kids including actor Matthias Brandt.
Awards
In 1971, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in reconciling Eastern Europe and West Germany.
Trivia
He ended his reign as the chancellor after his aide, Günter Guillaume, was said to be working for Stasi.
