About Wisława Szymborska
She is a Polish essayist, translator and poet who has been very instrumental in the world of communication of ideas. Her work gave her the opportunity to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1996.
Personal Life
Maria Wislawa Anna was born to Anna Szymborska and Wincenty Szymborski. Wicenty worked as a Steward of Wladyslaw Zamoyski who was a count, a patriot and patron. The Second World War disrupted her studies and this made her start attending underground classes. Not long after, she got a job as an employee on the railroad just so she would not be moved to Germany and forced to work as a laborer. It was during that time that she started writing and working on her art.
Career
In 1952, she worked on “Dlatego żyjemy” which also translates as ‘That’s Why We Are All Alive’, “Wołanie do Yeti” (Calling Out to Yeti) and “Widok z ziarnkiem piasku” (View with a Grain of Sand) among others.
Death
In 2012, after battling with lung cancer for a while, she passed away.
Achievements
In 1963, she was given The Polish Ministry of Culture Prize. In 1995, she received an Honorary Degree from Adam Mickiewicz University. She also received a Gold Medal for Merit to Culture- Gloria Artis.
