About Yayoi Kusama
Yayoi Kusama channelled her childhood hallucinations into something positive by recreating what she saw into artwork. The Japanese contemporary artist has specialised in installation art, sculpture, painting, fashion, drawing and performance art.
Kusama first garnered success in Japan in the 1950s through her now-trademark polka dots art pieces. She later became a prominent icon of the pop art movement of the 1960s in New York City. She started writing novels, poems and short stories after moving back to Japan.
Personal Life
She was raised in a plant nursery-owning family of merchants. She suffered trauma from her childhood due to her mother, Shigeru Kusama sending her to spy on her father, Kamon Okamura’s extramarital affairs several times. She has one child. She has been very vocal about her struggle with her mental health.
Achievements
Kusama has been a recipient of the Praemium Imperiale, the Asahi Prize and the Person of Cultural Merit.
Trivia
In 2014, her art piece, the “White No. 28” was bought for $7.1 million at an auction.
