About Yoshiyuki Tomino
The Japanese director is popularly known for his anime series “Gundam” and for the conversion of “Super Robot” genre into “Real Robot” genre.
Education
He studied at the College of Art of Nihon University.
Writing & Animation
Tomino wrote the script for the first Japanese anime television series “Tetsuwan Atomu” while working with Mushi Productions in 1963.
During the 1970s to the 1990s, he became a prominent part of the anime studio Sunrise, directing several animation films. He directional credits include “Mobile Suit Gundam” an anime series which ran from 1979 to 1980. That decade also saw him direct the Japanese manga series “Triton of the Sea”.
Honors
He was awarded the “Best Director” at the 2006 Tokyo International Anime Fair for his 2005 film “Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: Heirs to the Stars”.
Tomino won the Animage Anime Grand Prix award for his directed series “Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979– 80 and “Space Runaway Ideon” in 1980.
