About Zbigniew Brzezinski
Zbigniew Brzezinski was a Polish-American political scientist and diplomat. He counselled former US president Lyndon B. Johnson from 1966 to 1968.
In 1977, he was appointed as the National Security Advisor for President Jimmy Carter’s administration. He had previously served as the latter’s main adviser on foreign policy from 1975. While in office, he foresaw foreign policy events such as the Torrijos-Carter Treaties signing, arming the mujahideen of Afghanistan to prevent Soviet invasion and the Camp David Accords brokerage.
Family Life
He was the son of Polish consular official, Tadeusz Brzezinski and Leonia Roman. He and Emilie Benes, a Czech-American sculptor, married in 1961. He was the father of foreign policy expert Ian Brzezinski and his two siblings; Mark and Mika.
Achievements
He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981 and was conferred with Poland’s Order of the White Eagle in 1995.
Death
He died on 26 May 2017.
