He is a retired Brazilian football player, who is known to have occupied the midfield and left wing-back positions during his playing career. After his footballing career, Zé Roberto served as a technical advisor at Palmeiras.
He kicked off his youth career with Palestra de São Bernardo and began his senior career in 1994 with the Brazilian football club, Portuguesa. He joined Real Madrid in 1997 and then moved to Flamengo the following year.
Other clubs that he featured for include Bayer Leverkusen (1998 - 2002), Bayern Munich (2002 - 2006), Hamburger SV (2009 - 2011), Palmeiras (2015 - 2017), and more. He played 84 games for the Brazilian senior national team between 1995 and 2006.

His father is José da Silva while his mother is Maria da Silva. He is known to have gotten married to Luciana da Silva. His children are Isabelli, Endrik, and Miriá da Silva.
Achievements
He won the "Copa América" with Brazil in 1997 and 1999 and also the "FIFA Confederations Cup" in 1997 and 2005.
He was included in the "FIFA World Cup All-Star Team" in 2006 and the "Bola de Prata" in 2012 and 2014.
With Real Madrid, he won the "La Liga" in 1996-1997, the "Supercopa de España" in 1997, and the "UEFA Champions League" in 1997-1998.
