About Zero Mostel
Zero Mostel worked with the Public Works of Art Project as a teacher before deciding to chase a career in the entertainment industry. He was first hired by the Café Society in 1941 which aided his rapid rise to stardom. His popularity later earned him a spot on two radio shows, and also on Broadway productions.
He’s best known for his performance as Tevye in the 1964 Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof”. His appearance in the 1976 film “The Front” earned him a number of award nominations.
Family
He was originally named Samuel Joel Mostel and was the son of Cina "Celia" Druchs and Israel Mostel. He had a brother called Bill Mostel.
His marriage to Clara Sverd came to an end in 1944. He later married Kathryn Celia Harkin with whom he had two kids including actor Joshua Mostel.
Education
He moved to City College of New York after completing Seward Park High School. He briefly studied at New York University.
Awards
He won three Tony Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Drama Desk Award.
Trivia
In the 1950s, his name appeared in the Hollywood Blacklist.
He was multi-lingual and spoke Italian, Yiddish, and German aside from the English.
