About Zvonimir Boban
Zvonimir Boban is a retired Croatian professional soccer player who played for his national and club teams between 1978 and 2002.
He captained the "Hrvatska Nogometna Reprezentacija" at the France 1998 FIFA World Cup where Croatia won third place against the Netherlands.
Boban played in midfield and offensive positions. His versatility also allowed him to play in other positions as either a supporting striker or a winger.
International Career and Records
Boban made six appearances with three goals for Yugoslavia U20 and won the 1987 World Youth Championship. He made seven appearances for the senior team from 1988 to 1991, scoring one goal in his last appearance against the Faroe Islands.
After the dissolution of Yugoslavia, he went on to be capped 49 times for Croatia between 1992 and 1999. He found the back of the net 12 times in those 49 caps.
Club football
Boban began his career at Dinamo Zagreb when he was 16. His 109 appearances for the club saw him score 45 goals. By 19, he had become the captain of the team.
He played for A.C. Milan from 1991 to 2001 in the Serie A, making 178 appearances and scoring 21 goals. He won four Serie A titles and three Italian Supercups (Supercoppa Italiana).
For the 1991/1992 season, he was sent on loan to Italian club Bari. In Bari, he made 17 appearances and two goals. Later in 2001 he was sent on loan to Celta Vigo where he retired the same year because he felt he was not given many games to play.
Life after Retirement
He finished a degree in history from the University of Zagreb in 2004. FIFA employed Boban as Deputy Secretary-General in 2016 during which he helped in developing the Video Assistant Referee (VAR); he resigned the post in 2019.
In 2021, he was appointed the Chief of Football at UEFA (Union of European Football). Prior to that appointment, he had served as a chief football officer at his former club AC Milan.
Trivia
Boban physically assaulted a police officer on May 13, 1990 during a Dinamo Zagreb versus Red Star Belgrade game. He was suspended from the Yugoslavia national team and subsequently missed the 1990 World Cup.
